If you’re looking for a second hand bike, do make every effort to make sure it’s not a stolen bike. The London Cycling Campaign has loads of great advice about buying a bike, including types of bikes, child seats for carrying small children on your bike and trailers. Check whether your employer runs the Cycle to Work scheme, which spreads the purchase cost of a bike over several months, with discounts via tax exemptions. It is known as a ‘salary sacrifice’ scheme and encourages employees to cycle to work, whilst at the same time helping employers reap the benefits of a healthier workforce. Remember that bicycles with electric assist are available, which make longer journeys or hills much easier. You don’t have to be a pro-athlete to ride a bike!
