New pathway to link Edmonton to Enfield Council’s Meridian Water project
A tree-lined walking and cycling path that will link routes from Edmonton to the pioneering Meridian Water regeneration project has successfully received £720,000 of funding from Transport for London.
The path will connect Cemetery Walk with Angel Gardens at Conduit Lane, providing a route to link Edmonton with Meridian Water’s 10,000 new homes, shops, businesses and leisure facilities.
The route will include lighting across its entire length along with an avenue of trees and shrub planting. Wildflower meadow planting will help to promote wildlife and will complement the existing watercourse. The new path will sit alongside the existing Angel Gardens activity zone, a popular playground that includes parkour and outdoor gym equipment. The route is protected off the highway, making it safe for people walking and cycling alike.
Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Guney Dogan, said: “This will be a fantastic route that links two of the Council’s most ambitious projects – Cycle Enfield and Meridian Water. The plans are to provide a safe and convenient path that will benefit both people walking and cycling while also providing a beautiful outdoor space for the community and residents to enjoy at their leisure.
“We are already seeing increased cycling in the borough. Transport for London figures support the data from our own cycle counters, which show average increases of cycling levels of 52% along Green Lanes when comparing 2016 and 2018 data.
“This clearly shows that if you create the right conditions, more people will choose to cycle. As we build the wider network we look forward to seeing the number of people cycling continue to grow.”
Work on the path is due to start later in the summer, subject to approvals. Plans will become available to view on the Cycle Enfield website – people can sign-up here to receive updates.
Meanwhile, Cycle Enfield is close to completing the A1010 South scheme from Ponders End to Edmonton Green and has recently finished a consultation on the A1010 North stretch.
